Fantasy Tabletop Devlog – Unit Stats Explained, Fly Trait, Campaign Map Units & Zarhi Canopy Lurker Toad

Today it’s time to go a little bit into the game rules! The PDF will be available soon so that you can check it out yourself. But let’s start by interpreting the Unit Cards and how they differ from the Campaign Map Unit Cards. So, here we go with the rules:

Unit Cards serve as a reference for the statistics of Campaign Map Unit Cards.

Campaign Map Unit Cards are the ones that players will actually place on the Campaign Map and recruit as Units.

Units come in Tier 1, 2, or 3 – the higher the Tier, the more elite the Unit.

Each Unit Card shows all the Unit’s stats and abilities.

The card name is to the left of the Tier icon.

The Special Ability (if any) is written below the artwork, under the “Special Ability” label. Unit Type is noted below the Special Ability (for example: Infantry).

Campaign Map Unit Cards are fully laminated – made for writing!

HP/Notes zone – use it to track the Unit’s health, effects, and cooldowns.

Most Campaign Map Unit Cards show their recruitment cost. However, Chaos Campaign Map Units do not, as they follow a unique mechanic.

It’s also worth noting that all Campaign Map Units have the same amount of HP = 10!

So, here are the two cards: first, we have the Unit Card, and then the Campaign Map Unit Card of the same Unit! The book-like section on the Campaign Map Unit Card is for writing with the dry-erase markers that will be included in the box. The ones that you write on are basically the ones you will move on the Campaign Map and Battle Map.

The cool thing here is that during the battle, your Campaign Map Unit Cards will lose HP, and after the battle, the HP does not reset! You place them back on the Campaign Map, and depending on how the battle went, they might be pretty beat up… That adds a great strategy layer! Maybe you won, but at what cost?? Or maybe you lost the battle, but you sacrificed some of your less valuable Units to take out some important ones of the enemy? There is a lot of fun to be had with this!

Now let’s go stat by stat by stat:

Attack (max 10): This value represents the Unit’s melee strength. It is compared against the enemy’s Melee Defense and Armor during combat.

Ranged Attack (max 10): This value represents the Unit’s ranged strength. It is compared against the enemy’s Armor during combat.

Range (X–Y): Indicates the minimum and maximum distance from which a Unit can perform a ranged attack. The values of X and Y are always between 1 and 10. Melee Units have a range of 1–1, meaning they must stand adjacent to their target. Siege Units often have ranges like 3–8.

Leadership (max 10): Determines turn order. Units with higher Leadership perform their action before those with lower values.

Armor (max 10): This value is compared against both ranged and melee attacks. As a general rule: the higher, the better!

Melee Defense (max 10): This stat is used when defending against melee attacks.

And of course, we’ve got our traits:

Armor Piercing – This Unit’s attacks ignore Armor.

Fly – For this Unit, moving through tiles occupied by other Units or structures has no movement cost. This Unit can move over them but must land on a free tile.

Traits can have a huge impact on how the Unit behaves and can change its role completely. The Fly trait basically allows you to extend the movement range of a Unit if it has any occupied adjacent tiles in a straight line.

Also, we have something special today, arriving as part of the stretch goals: the Canopy Lurker Toad! A pretty strong flanking monster that has the ability to deal damage from the flanks and then retreat as if nothing happened. It’s very useful for harassment. Might not be the fastest when it comes to Leadership, but this Toad’s attack power and armor definitely make up for it!

Okayyy, and that’s pretty much it for today! The launch is getting closer and closer (we’re planning on launching on May 12th!) and the gameplay video should be dropping soon. Take care and see you all next week!

Ohhh, and also, we are so close to 1,000 followers on Kickstarter! Thanks so much for your support, as always, it means a lot 🔥🔥
